Which Rapé Suits You? Complete Guide by Intention & Type
Written by Heartcore by Nature · Shamanic specialists with direct lineages from the Amazon
Anyone entering the world of rapé soon discovers that there is no “best” rapé — only a rapé that best suits you and your moment. At Heartcore by Nature we receive questions every week from people choosing for the first time: “Which rapé is for beginners? What is the difference between Tsunu and Mulateiro? And which one suits focus, or rather ceremony?”
In this complete guide we answer all of these questions from years of experience with indigenous masters from the Amazon. You will learn how rapé types differ from one another, which one suits your intention, and how to make your first choice with confidence. No marketing talk — just the wisdom of age-old traditions, translated into recognisable choices for today.
What makes rapé types different from each other?
Rapé is a sacred shamanic snuff from the Amazon. Its base consists of finely ground sacred plants and herbs from the rainforest, mixed with the ash of sacred trees. But within that basic formula there is an incredible diversity. Five factors determine why one rapé feels completely different from another:
1. The plant and how it is prepared
The plants used in rapé grow in different parts of the Amazon. Each region has unique growing conditions — soil, shade, altitude and rain — that determine the taste and character. In addition, the plants are often fermented, dried over fire or sun-dried according to tribal traditions. This preparation process makes the difference between a gentle morning rapé and a powerful ceremonial rapé.
2. The tree ash: the silent power behind every rapé
The ash added to the blend is essential. This plant ash largely determines the characteristic effect and the character of each rapé:
- Tsunu (Platycyamus regnellii) — classic, clear, balanced
- Mulateiro (Calycophyllum spruceanum) — grounding, powerful, transformative
- Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) — warm, enveloping, harmonising
- Cacao (Theobroma cacao) — heart-opening, gentle
- Murici (Byrsonima spp.) — gentle, suitable for beginners
- Macambo (Theobroma bicolor) — refined, grounding
3. The lineage: which tribe does the recipe come from?
Every indigenous tribe has its own rapé recipes, passed down from generation to generation. The Yawanawá, Huni Kuin, Apurinã, Katukina, Nukini and Kuntanawa each have their own preferences in plant species, ash, preparation method and added herbs. As a result, a Yawanawá rapé has a fundamentally different character from a Huni Kuin rapé. We discuss the lineages further on in this guide.
4. Herbs that may be added
Some rapé blends contain extra herbs such as jurema, sananga, caferana or flowers. These additions strengthen the blend for specific intentions such as openness, clarity, relaxation or energetic cleansing.
5. The intention with which the rapé was made
This may sound esoteric, but within the Amazon traditions it is fundamental. The hands that make the rapé carry their prayer into every powder. A rapé made during a family ceremony carries a different energy from a commercially produced version. That is why Heartcore works exclusively with direct lineages and visits the communities our rapé comes from every year.
Rapé by intention: which one suits your moment?
The most practical way to choose your rapé is to look inward first: what are you looking for right now? Not which rapé is “the best”, but which one suits where you are today. Below we discuss five common intentions and the matching rapé types.
For focus & mental clarity
Working on an important project, preparing for a creative day or looking for calm in your meditation? Then a clear, sharp rapé suits your moment. These rapé types calm the mental noise without making you drowsy or heavy.
- Menta Rapé — refreshing, with a light note of mint. Ideal for the morning.
- Tsunu Rapé — classic, balanced, perfect for daily practice.
- Cumaru Rapé — warm and grounding, but leaves the mind clear.
When to use: in the morning before your working day, before an important meeting, or as the opening of a meditation practice.
For opening the heart
Sometimes you long for softness. For feeling what lies beneath the surface. For connection — with yourself, a loved one, or a process that asks for attention. Then you are looking for a gentle, opening rapé.
- Rapé with Cacao — the combination with sacred cacao opens the heart in a gentle, enveloping way.
- Macambo Rapé — refined, grounding, with an opening towards emotion.
- Murici Rapé — gentle and accessible, often chosen by beginners.
When to use: during self-reflection, for partner work, or in a shared ceremony with loved ones. Also read our guide on ceremonial cacao to combine both traditions.
For grounding & letting go
After a busy day, after intense emotions, or before sleep: there are moments when your mind asks for grounding. A rapé that brings you back into your body, calms your head and helps you let go.
- Mulateiro Rapé — deeply grounding, powerful, earthing.
- Tsunami Rapé — intensely cleansing, for those who really want to reset the mind.
- 7 Herbs Rapé — a blend of seven sacred herbs for a complete reset.
When to use: in the evening, after an intense working day, or after a ceremony as a moment of integration.
For ceremony & transformation
Working with a facilitator? Taking part in a moon ceremony or retreat? Then there are rapé types tuned to deeper transformation. These blends ask for preparation, intention and preferably guidance.
- Royal Rapé Pack — a selection of powerful ceremonial rapés.
- Tsunami Royal — exceptionally deep, for experienced practitioners.
- Pitakaya Rapé — classic ceremonial rapé with traditional origins.
When to use: within the setting of an organised ceremony. See our Heartcore ceremonies for guided experiences.
For the first contact (beginners)
New to this world? Welcome. We recommend starting gently, predictably and with respect. Do not start with the most powerful rapé — you would miss the subtler layers of this tradition.
- Tsunu Rapé — classic, mild, perfect for the first months.
- Cumaru Rapé — warm, enveloping and not too powerful.
- Menta Rapé — refreshing, opens without overwhelming.
When to use: solo in a quiet environment, or preferably with the guidance of an experienced practitioner. Also read our article What is rapé? for a solid start.

Indigenous lineages: what is behind the name?
Behind every rapé there is a people, a land, a story. The lineage is not marketing — it is the heart of what you hold in your hands. Below are the six most important lineages you will encounter at Heartcore.
Yawanawá
The Yawanawá live in the west of the Brazilian Amazon, in the region of Acre. Their rapé traditions are known for clarity, power and musicality. Many of our most classic blends, including Tsunu and Tsunami, come directly from the Yawanawá lineage. The community is known for its annual festivals where song, dance and age-old traditions come together.
Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá)
Huni Kuin literally means “the true people”. They live spread across Brazil and Peru. Their rapé traditions are gentle, heart-opening and strongly focused on song. Many Cumaru and Menta blends bear the mark of this lineage. They are also known for their complex cosmology and rich ceremonial traditions.
Apurinã
The Apurinã are a small, very traditional community in the Brazilian Amazon. Their rapé blends are often powerful, grounding and transformative. Mulateiro and certain Macambo blends have their origins in this lineage.
Katukina
The Katukina live in close contact with the rainforest. Their rapé recipes are refined and ceremonial. Their blends are often used for deeper inner work.
Kuntanawa
The Kuntanawa are a resurgent lineage — for years they were thought to be extinct, but the community has reunited and is restoring its traditions. Their rapé carries a power of remembrance and restoration entirely its own.
Nukini
The Nukini are known for the gentle, feminine energy in their rapé making. Many of their blends contain flowers and light herbs — ideal for heart work.
So how do you choose your first rapé?
Pause for a moment. Breathe in. Ask yourself these three questions:
- What is my intention for the coming period? Focus, opening the heart, grounding, ceremony, first contact?
- How do I want to begin? Solo in complete calm, with a partner, or in a guided ceremony?
- Which lineage speaks to me intuitively? Notice which description touches you — there is often wisdom in that.
Based on your answers, you will find the recommendations in this guide that suit your moment. Always start with a small amount (no more than a pea, divided over both nostrils) and give yourself the space to learn to recognise the subtler layers.

Frequently asked questions about rapé types
Which rapé is best for beginners?
For beginners we recommend Tsunu, Cumaru or Menta. These blends are gentle, predictable and give you the space to learn to recognise the subtler effects without being overwhelmed. Start with an amount no larger than a pea, divided over both nostrils.
What is the difference between gentle and strong rapé?
The difference lies in the composition of the blend, the concentration of plant ash, the preparation time and the fineness of the grind. Gentle rapés such as Tsunu or Murici have a lightly opening effect; powerful rapés such as Tsunami or Mulateiro work deeper and more intensely. For ceremonial work, people often choose more powerful blends.
Can I combine several types of rapé?
Do not combine within one session, because every rapé carries its own intention and effect. You can, however, use different rapé types at different moments — for example Menta in the morning and Mulateiro in the evening. Many experienced practitioners gradually build up a personal rapé collection.
How often can I use rapé?
This depends on your intention and sensitivity. Some practitioners use rapé daily as part of their morning practice; others reserve it for special ceremonial moments. Listen to your body and use rapé consciously, not out of habit.
How do I store rapé?
Store rapé in an airtight jar, dry and out of direct sunlight. Avoid moisture and heat. Well-stored rapé stays potent for years. Many practitioners create their own sacred storage place — sometimes an altar — to honour the rapé with respect.
Is all rapé authentic?
Unfortunately not. Commercial imitations that do not come from indigenous lineages appear on the European market more and more often. Heartcore works exclusively with direct contacts in the Amazon and visits the communities in person every year. Ask about the origin with every purchase — a reliable supplier will tell you exactly which lineage and which maker.
Which rapé for the evening vs the morning?
For the morning, choose a clearer blend such as Menta, Tsunu or Cumaru — these open and activate without over-stimulation. For the evening, grounding blends such as Mulateiro or Tsunami are more suitable — they help you let go and settle into your body for the night.
How do I know which lineage suits me?
Read the lineage descriptions in this guide and notice which description draws your attention. Your intuition often knows more than your mind. Many practitioners start with one lineage and gradually expand as their practice deepens. We are happy to share our experience — get in touch for personal advice.
Conclusion: your sacred first step
There is no “wrong” rapé — only rapé that has not been introduced to you yet. By starting from your intention, and choosing the right lineage, the right wood and the right blend to match, an encounter arises that cannot be forced, but can unfold.
At Heartcore by Nature we know every rapé personally. We know which maker made it, which ceremony preceded it, which tree provided the ash. You feel that personal connection in every application.
